INTRODUCTION

Steven Walker is a self-employed independent Advocate (Barrister) who has been admitted to the Faculty of Advocates and permitted to practise as an Advocate before the Courts of Scotland. Mr. Walker is a practising International Commercial Arbitration, Corporate & Commercial Advocate at the Scottish Bar. He practises Scots, English and International Law.

Advocates (sometimes referred to as "Counsel") can be instructed by a solicitor or a member of other professional bodies recognised for this purpose (direct access professional bodies). Advocates offer a special and independent service, quite separate and distinct from that provided by solicitors.

In particular:

Advocates specialise in the preparation and presentation of cases before any Court in Scotland, including the Supreme Courts (the High Court of Justiciary, the Court of Criminal Appeal and the Court of Session); the Judicial Committees of the House of Lords and the Privy Council; the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Communities; and a wide range of Arbitral Tribunals, Inquiries and other such proceedings in Scotland and around the world.

Advocates are not just specialist court pleaders. They also offer advice on a wide range of legal problems, both general and specialist (often termed Counsel’s Opinion). Counsel can also provide verbal advice in a consultation, which can take place anywhere in Scotland or around the world.

For administrative purposes, Counsel are divided into groups or "stables" each of which has an Advocates’ Clerk and at least one deputy. The Clerks assist Counsel with the smooth running of their practices, schedule court appearances and consultations and deal with solicitors on their behalf. Counsel’s fees are negotiable and can be discussed with the Clerk.
